Hey im Barbara Johnson. I am a proud mother of 2 children. My son Seth is 6 and my daughter Ava is 4. They are the reason I am in school. This is my 3rd semester at the Menominee College and I really like this school and the people I have met along the way. My major is Liberal Studies-Social Sciences. I love to write short stories, song lyrics, and poetry. I am a beginner at doing any kind of art, but I am excited to see where this class takes us.
The Native Artist I chose is Kirby Sattler. His artwork evolves from the history, ceremony, mythology, and spirituality of the Native American. He tries to depict the close relationship between the Indian and his natural world.The wearing of sacred objects( part of an animal), shows a source of spiritual power. The artist states, "I attempt to give the viewer of my work a sense of what these sacred objects meant to the wearer; when combined with the proper ritual or prayer, there would be a transference of identity". He uses realism as a style. He layers transparent washes over multiple underpaintings, to end up with paintings that are detailed and textured.
I loved all of his artwork, it was so beautiful. I think Native American Art is being able to see through the eyes of a Native American, and to be able to successfully convey it through artwork using emotion, respect, education, and tradition. To be a Native Artist you have to be very open, real, unhibited, have a strong respect of nature, and to be able to view yourself on the same level as everything else on earth. We are all relatives.
